Komárek J., Kovacik L. Schizotrichacean cyanobacteria from central Spitsbergen (Svalbard) // Polar Biol., 2013. Vol. 36. P. 1811-1822.
Basionym: Microcoleus sociatus var. abiscoensis Skuja, Nova Acta Reg. Soc. Sci. Upsal., ser. IV, 18(3): 61, 1964.
Filaments solitary or in small groups composed of thin trichomes that are ± parallelly arranged in fascicles, 1–4 to more together and closed in a common mucilaginous sheath. Sheaths are colourless, not or only very slightly stratified and usually open at the apex. Solitary trichomes sometimes surpass the ends of the sheaths. Trichomes thin, cylindrical, 1–2 lm wide, not or slightly constricted at cross-walls, with elongated cells, bright blue-green, sometimes indistinctly narrowed and pointed at the ends. Cells distinctly longer than wide, cylindrical, pointed at trichome ends.
Trichocoleus abiscoensis was originally described from wet soils in the Abisko-valley in N Sweden, particularly on sites without dense vegetation (Skuja 1964). The Svalbard specimens were found in the same habitats, on wet soil covered by scarce tundra vegetation.
