Description and diagnosis of the Svalbard populations Filaments ± straight, densely aggregated parallelly and radially in large, mucilaginous, later hemispherical and up to several cm large, black colonies, tomentose on the surface, conically pointed at the ends, in the middle ± 10–12 mkm wide. Sheaths thick, conically narrowed towards their ends, pointedly closed, smooth from outside, not flexuous, in lower parts dark yellow-brown, in upper parts almost hyaline, in lower parts layered two to several times. Trichomes cylindrical, thin, not or slighlty constricted at cross-walls, 1–5 in a sheath, towards ends only one in a sheath. Cells slightly longer than wide, cylindrical, often granular, particularly near cross-walls 1–1.5 lm wide, terminal cells rounded at their ends.
